LCGC address adult literacy by offering both one-on-one tutoring, as well as small and large group sessions. Adults of all ages and language levels are welcome, including native English speakers who need assistance in reading and writing. Last year 3,055 adults participated in LCGC’s programs.
Classes are offered in:
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Basic Literacy
- GED Preparation
- U.S. Citizenship Test Preparation
- Computer Literacy
ESOL students participate in either group classes or individual tutoring sessions. All classes are taught in English to encourage complete immersion in the English. Curriculum includes the Laubach Method, Side by Side, English in Action, Passages to ESL, LitStart and other books and materials.
For students improving their Basic Literacy Skills, the Barton System of Reading and Spelling is used. Students who live with dyslexia work with their tutors, utilizing the Orton-Gillingham method.
Students who wish to achieve their GED are given instruction in basic core curriculum, in order to prepare them for the next step in obtaining a higher level of education. Students who desire to become a U.S. Citizen are schooled in history, government, and other subjects to help them pass the citizenship test. As a result of our classes, 100 percent of our students who took the test passed and became proud new U.S. citizens.
In an age of increasing technology, it is vital that students have a working knowledge of computers and their basic software. Students independently study English grammar, listening comprehension, reading, writing, and vocabulary at different levels using three types of software programs. LCGC also offers its students classes in Microsoft Word, typing, and Internet research.
