Carol DeJoy Moms & Tots Program
Young mothers in our Carol DeJoy Moms & Tots® program do not have the education or language skills necessary to gain employment and help care for their families. Moms & Tots® is the lifeline for disadvantaged mothers and at risk kids because it gives them the opportunity to learn in a collaborative environment. Established in 2004 at one location with only four mothers and their children, Moms & Tots® is currently active at at sites throughout Lee County and has grown to teach 1,160 mothers and children during the 2014-2015 school year.
When a women is caught in a cycle of abuse and isolation, she is unable to take care of herself or her family. Education enables underserved women to take control of their lives and create better opportunities for themselves and their families. Moms & Tots® provides the skills to continue learning, gain meaningful employment, and take an active role in their children’s education. A program such as our Moms & Tots® is more than a literacy program, it is a community. Our LCGC staff and tutors create relationships with young women and mothers that give them a safe environment in which they can learn.
